Use of Antibiotics in Delaying Birth of Premature Babies
Friday, January 27th, 2012
Use of antibiotics in delaying premature birth caused much controversy among experts in the UK. Some researchers found that this practice can cause effects that are harmful to the baby in the long run.
Cons Opinions
According to them, the harmful impacts include the disruption of Cerebral Palsy (CP) – which is a disturbance in the balance and motor, and can lead to defects in hearing and vision. Such disturbances are not only attacking the baby shortly after birth, but also most likely be held until he was grown.
The discussion was raised in England after the increasing number of antibiotic prescribing to pregnant women who have not broken their fetal membrane, with intent to delay the premature birth. In fact, these antibiotics should not be given routinely, especially if the woman is pregnant does not have an infection and the fetal membrane water is still not broken.
Pros Opinions
In the view of those who say that giving antibiotics to pregnant women is safe, one reason is the research conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC) for 7 years.
They have examined a number of 3196 children whose mothers were given antibiotics (erythromycin or co-amoxiclav) during pregnancy. Both types of antibiotics is believed to treat primary infection that can lead to the mother gave birth to her baby prematurely.
The conclusion?
If indeed the mother was diagnosed with an infection that can cause premature birth, the MRC said that why not give him antibiotics, because it expected to help save lives.
But clearly, if you are a mother … avoid the indiscriminate use of antibiotics while pregnant and Always consult with your gynecologist what kind of antibiotics are safe for your content!
